Australia

My daily routine is sensitive. When something disrupts it, everything else fails to sit right. Tim is leaving for the Outback for work while I'm left alone. I'm not alone though -- I have friends from work, friends from Facebook, other random friends, and parents. It's great.

Why do I need someone to be by my side at night? Why can't I fall asleep and feel peaceful and at ease when I'm alone? Are we meant to be left alone? I've always been surrounded by people -- living at home, living in residence, and working or studying abroad or in another part of the country. Why do people feel the need for personal space? Or living alone?

I wish I had a larger appt (3 bedrooms) and lived with more friends. That way, maybe life would be easier -- maybe for more people than just for myself.

Reflections

Sitting in my den, I have so much to say, but nothing to write.
***
The soft light bounces back to me.

I like how the light falls through the cracks of the blinds, revealing greys, blues, purples, and creams. The soft light bounces off the glass doors and shelters me in my fish bowl. Behind me is my full length mirror, still not hung on the wall because of the concrete that hides behind it. I turned to look at myself over my shoulder; slouched, seeing the girl on the other side peer through the corner of her eye. It's a stare I give only to myself. She looks distant and dark with the soft light behind her reflecting off of me. The soft light bounces back to me.
***

How can we relate to people without looking at ourselves first? How do we learn to understand others?

How does one become selfless but not to the extreme where you no longer have respect for yourself? Can selfless- and selfishness be two sides of the same trait? Can it be selfish to care about the happiness of others?

Books to read and some updates

Good afternoon, team.

I have four piece of news (you have all been sent an email about this as well).

News Bulletin 1
I found one more book, where two of the chapters are going to be useful for our user/task analysis and creating personas. I've only glimpsed at it (I'm at work you know, busy woman HA!), but this might be helpful. I'll try to photocopy this some time today.

Source: User Interface Design for Mere Mortals by Eric Butow (2007)

Did you want to preview the book? A great place to check is here (you can also try amazon, but the site below makes you want to buy any book!)
Look here: http://safari.oreilly.com/9780321447739?tocview=true

Here is the Table of Contents for the useful bits. I consider only Chapters 5 and 6 to be relevant for this project. (Note: I copied this by hand, so I hope it's accurate).

Chapter 5. How Users Behave
The Psychology of User Actions
Psychological Types
The four Primary Temperaments
Knowledge: Brain Versus World
Task Structures
Conscious and Subconscious Behavior
Transforming Difficult Tasks into Simple Ones
Creating a Conceptual Model
Case Study: Interviewing to Establish the Conceptual Model
Summary
Review Questions

Chapter 6. Analyzing Your Users
The Users' Mental Model
The Result
Implementation Versus Mental Models
The Experience Bell Curve
Different Needs for Different Groups
Understanding the User's Goals
User and Task Analysis
Constructing Personas
Watching Users in Action
Persona Evaluation
Case Study: Producing a Primary Persona
Summary
Review Questions

News Bulletin 2
I will try to speak with the IBM librarian this week. She is an expert user (librarian) but unique because she does not use the particular system we are analyzing. I'll update you on my progress.

News Bulletin 3
I have another book to circulate to the team. It's an easy to read, and a very fast read on graphics, general design, and how to use appropriate typeface.

Source: The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams (2008)

News Bulletin 4
I plan to learn how to use Adobe In Design (a desktop publishing program). I hope to create the document plan using this program and our final project. I hope to assess whether it's easy enough to learn and use in the next couple of weeks. I think it will be, but I think more than one person should work with me on it, preferably someone who plans to take the rest of the courses in this certificate. You will eventually have to use either this program or something very similar to it. I have the program for free and a book that helps you learn how to create things and tutorials.

Thank you for all of your hard work team!!!

Class of March 6th: Notes

Class schedule: Topics

March 6th

Task analysis
Instructions

March 13th: Structure

March 20th: Jamie away on vacation

March 27th: Document plan due

April 3rd: Project discussion: Jamie will answer questions about the project

April 15th: Project due

Task Analysis

While you build the audience matrix, you are beginning to tell stories about the user of the technology.

Scenarios: what is the dramatic story that you going to tell about the audience. It shows how a persona in a certain setting works towards goals. The design community recognizes that conflict is part of the story but they focus on goals that are present in the scenario.

Persona: is not usually one real person but is the amalgam of users in your research

People who have roles within a setting and want to achieve certain goals

Goals: Can be defined as success and accomplishments.

What is the goal of the persona?

===============================================================

Example 1

  • First year university students: what role do they play?
    1. New users/novices
  • What is the goal of the user?
    1. To find some books for an assignment
  • What is the setting?
    1. The York library online catalogue (access from either home or the library)

===============================================================

  • Now that you have the persona, setting and the goals, you can tell the story (flush out any conflicts that get in the way of the goals)
  • Creating a story allows you to have a wealth of samples to understand your audience (put into a form that gives you a picture)
  • Could our persona actually accomplish the goals
    • Some people learn with the help of examples (if you choose this option, have examples that directly transfer into the text)
    • Provide key scenarios we’ve identified and mention that in the document plan; persona, settings, and goals.
    • Generalize from the specific to write good instructions for your audience

A good process should

o List all of the goals that the audience have

o Decompose the goals into tasks or procedures; do they have a title, subject

o Tasks also have subtasks

o Define the audience; what do they know?

o What roles do users play and what are their goals?

o What kinds of conflicts do they get into?

o What do they need to do to succeed in achieving their goals?

o What tasks do they follow to accomplish goals?

o Find a representative number of scenarios in order to document for the audience

===============================================================

Example 2

Signing up for a new bank account

Persona

Someone opening a small business bank account, sole proprietor

Setting

Business roles: walks into a bank to open a bank account

Goals

Certain subtasks: get an appointment, discuss what kinds of accounts are available, and maybe get a line of credit.

===============================================================

What does Jamie want in the document plan?

  1. Audience analysis
    1. Descriptions, scenarios, and examples

  1. Technical description(not a long one)
    1. Describe what is it that you are documenting
    2. Describe the kinds of problems that the audience encounter
    3. What does the system achieve to do? What does it fail to do?

In this process, sometime you might be asked to write a technical description for a system that is not built. In this case you will describe

o your perspective of the system

o the scope of the technology and its uses from a manufacturer’s perspective

o the key features from a manufacturer’s perspective

  1. Task analysis
    1. Take the goals that you listed and decompose them in their constituent tasks
  2. Table of Contents(TOC)
    1. Never have a goal that starts with “Using …” or “Working with …”
    2. Tasks and goals are actions and therefore should be active and not passive
    3. You can group by goals to get information
  3. Document Specs
    1. What type are you going to use?
    2. How will you use white space/ leading?
    3. What kinds of graphics and design are going to use?

If you want, you can present a mock to show what it is going to look like.

This document plan should not be more than 10 pages.

o Audience analysis takes the larger part of the plan

o Task analysis should be 2nd longest part

o Technical description should be from ½ to 1 page

o Once you have a document plan with TOC then it is easy to guess the number of pages that your project is going to have. In a real life project, you can also estimate how many people you need, how long it is going to take, and how much it is going to cost. This way the work can be professional and efficient.

Instructions

  • Communicating with users will be effective if you know the physical surroundings and the position of the user
    • Is there something physical that can get in the way while the user is accomplishing goals?
  • Keep in mind the limits of the technology while writing the instructions

Example 3: Write instructions for someone learning how to walk.

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

As legend has it, Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in 6 words. His response was "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

The technical analysis assignment looks more like a riddle to me.

How much do we include in 500 words? I'm not complaining that we don't have enough to write, but what kind of detail do we need? Are the few readings on writing/graphical analysis enough to help up write something cleaver and thought-provoking?

Meh.

Could you describe yourself in 6 words? I find it almost as difficult as this assignment -- Ha! -- so much to include, but to what level of detail? I'll give this a try.

Bespoke threads. Active life. Loves all.

Alas, another week will begin

Ladies,

I'm still awake and need to run off to sleep ... as soon as I get the last half of my lunch made.

I've had one of the busy months in my life, and no signs of slowing down. I have put some thought into the assignment (one due on Feb 21). Instead of having a nervous breakdown (joke), I'll probably email him the goods the day after or something. I'll see. I just want to get this term done!

I want to get back on the ball next weekend for this project. This whole reading week thing didn't help my situation :( but I think I see the light!

I want everyone to focus on this; in one month we should be close to finished our project. Wouldn't that be mahvelous?

I haven't kept up on my reading, but I'll try to do better.

I want to hear how everyone is. How are you? I've been trapped in my own world, deciding it would be better to try to power through this crazy busy time.

Hugs and love for everyone!

Monday, January 21, 2008

Hi everyone!!!

Hello ladies,
Thank you for the invite. Hope everyone's weekend was not as short as mine!
See you gals on Thursday.

Photography? Ok. Why can't we see it? I'm curious!

Here is the course web site.

Brainstorming -- class project

I've decided that working on an "open source" project and creating documentation for a piece of software is the way to go. Not only can we contribute our documentation to a team when we are done with the course, but we can put on our resumes that wrote documentation and it's out there for the world to see; it's a publication!

A great place to look for open source software is:

http://sourceforge.net/

Updates I'm writing this on Wednesday evening (Jan 9) 2 days later (I've been researching)

I have three ideas for this project. To ensure that everyone has access to the software, my requirement when searching was that the software was open and free. Open is hard concept to define here so I defer to wikipedia or opensource.org. I also don't want to pay for it, but legally. I also wanted to brainstorm about software that everyone would be familiar with and that they've seen before. The categories of software I state in this modest list should be familiar with everyone in our class -- so the basic concepts of how to use this won't be too difficult to grasp.

  1. Instant messaging software
  2. Blogging software
  3. Photo management software
Let me give some examples of software we can work on for the project, going through each idea above.

  1. Instant messaging software
The IM clients Pidgin and Miranda have FAQ and some documentation already, but we could improve on it or we could reorganize some of the information. We can also contribute to these projects -- they are continuously being developed.

2. Blogging software

I don't have any other ideas other than Wordpress. It's an open project, not owned by a company and anyone can use it.

3. Picture management software

We could document Picasa, but it's owned by Google. I don't know if we would be able to publish our documentation when we finish this course.

Innovative minds don't think alike ...

... that's why were are all good friends because we collaborate well. Here's an article that caught my eye that is relevant to communication studies. The New York Times has really good articles that appeal to thirsty minds, read this one here.

Wishing all my friends a healthy and joyous New Year in 2008! I can't wait to see everyone in a few days. Let's kick ass!

3 a.m. til I come ... down from the caffeine!

Note to self: Do not drink a Grande Tazo Chai Latte at Starbucks unless you are fully prepared to be wired.
  • 100 mg of caffeine, check.
  • Time is flying by, check.
  • Can no longer focus, check.
Don't get me wrong, I love chai lattes. Not. At. 8 or 9 p.m. at night. I'm fine with it now. It's cool. No trippin'. Ok, a liTTle biT of Trippin'. Chill, Linda. Breathe!

In the short number of hours I've been home, I've watched House and Dexter (downloaded - no commercials), reviewed for the exam, knitted half of my scarf, tucked Tim into bed, cleaned the house, checked Facebook only once for 3 minutes (I deserve an award!), and I'm writing this blog entry. I rule!

This is what happens to a caffeine-sensitive person who woke up at 6 a.m., went to work, went to the gym, and reviewed stuff on the bus on the way home, and met up with Prisci in the evening. I should have been done hours ago! Usually by 1 a.m. I'm toast. But not tonight! ah! Did you know there is a Depeche Mode song called "But Not Tonight"? Didn't think so. I could most possibly do 50 push-ups in the state I'm in. I'm not jittery. I'm not headache-y. Nada. Not the name, but I mean not at all. This is the zone!

Why am I posting this? I simply want to warn you all about the affects/effects (or as I like to say "offects" because I can't figure out for the life of me WHICH is WHICH, so why not go with the "o"?) of drugs like caffeine in this instance on the body (nothing else, I promise). I feel like an experiment right now. I told myself that if I ever put myself in this situation again, I would blog about it. Why, because I can.

Sit back and enjoy the ride, Linda and anyone else that is reading this. The enlightening state of mind is a wondrous experience. I feel fully aware and pretty sponge-brained now. The benefit could be that I retain much of what comes my way; the detriment may be that I only remember the sopped up information when I'm in this state again.

Poll:
How much would you appreciate me being hyped during the exam? Pretty distracting in fact.

Let's leave it at that. Thank you for not smoking.

Why I Don't Write Fundraising Letters

Dear Colleagues

What would you do if you had no money to buy food? What if you couldn’t pay your child’s medical bills? Where could you turn if you were the victim of an abusive relationship?

Right now, many of our fellow Torontonians are asking themselves these very questions. Thanks to the United Way, many will get the help they need to make a fresh start, but the demands keep growing:

oOne in four Toronto families is struggling in poverty
o50% of households who use a food bank in Toronto report earning less than $12,000 per year
o76% of women and 88% of children in all Canadian shelters were escaping situations of abuse*

Do you want to change these numbers? Are you willing to help deserving families and individuals? With your support we can reduce poverty and provide vital services to those who really need them. Every year the United Way funds 200 agencies to help thousands of people living in and around our city – through food-banks, shelters, legal aid and advocacy for abused women, employment for disadvantaged Canadians and newcomers, youth counselling, leadership training, after-school programs, homecare and health support services, and so much more.

Sadly, the need for these services has dramatically increased in only one year. More than ever before, our help is needed to provide food, shelter, counselling and support for those who are at-risk in our population. Not only will 90% of donations go directly to client services, but through the generosity of the D’Alessandro family, an increase of 10% or more in our donation will be matched by the Leadership Challenge Grant. Last year we raised an impressive $205,760 – but with this added incentive, we know we can do even better. This year, we’re aiming to increase that amount by 15% for a total of $236,625 by December 31. If we can raise this sum, the United Way will receive an additional $30,000. Together, we can reach this goal and help others in our community.

Please give generously – without you, there would be no way.

Sincerely,

Kate Lundy
United Way Coordinator

Linda's A4: fund-raising

This is the final letter I gave Sabine. Enjoy!

Dear colleagues,

As the winter winds chill the air, you can feel extra warm this holiday season with a tax-deductible donation to the United Way during our year end gift matching campaign.

Your contribution can go a long way -- a donation of at least two dollars a day, every day, seven days a week, will help us reach this year's goal of $1 million. And until December 31, for every dollar you donate to the United Way we will double it with a matching gift from the Employee Charitable Foundation (ECF).

Did you know that only 10% of all charitable giving in Canada goes to Social Services?* This makes your gift all the more important. Last year, IBMers surpassed the $850 000 goal by contributing $1.75 a day. Thanks to your support, the United Way sustains a vital network of over 200 health and social service agencies in the Greater Toronto Area.

The United Way is an established organization with a proven track record. Over 90% of our donations go directly to initiatives such as the Eglinton Community Health Centre, the Pathways to Education Partnership, and the Career Search Portal. Through these initiatives, the United Way has placed 294 000 youth participants on the path to success with educational after-school programs, counselling, employment training, and job placements. A number of these job placements were here at the Toronto Lab!

IBM ECF Challenge 2007
When your division reaches 97% participation, each member wins a day off.

A payroll deduction form is enclosed to fill out for your convenience. Won't you return your donation of at least two dollars a day in the self-addressed envelope provided?

Without you, there would be no way.

Sincerely,

Linda Ristevski
ECF Coordinator
IBM Canada,
Toronto Lab

Assignment 4 (Second posting)

Dear colleagues,

As the winter winds chill the air, you can feel extra warm this holiday season by making a tax-deductible donation to the United Way during our year end gift matching campaign.

It's a really exciting time to make a gift to the United Way. Until December 31, for every dollar you donate to the United Way we will double it by a matching gift from the Employee Charitable Foundation up to $5000.

The United Way could not sustain a vital network of over 200 health and social service agencies without the support of IBMers. Currently, government support accounts for less than 50 per cent of revenues. The remainder must be made up through the generosity of individual and corporate gifts.

Without your support, the United Way could not finance such important initiatives as the Eglinton Community Health Centre, the Pathways to Education Partnership or the Career Search Portal. Please don't hesitate, make a tax-deductible donation today. Your contribution can go a long way -- a donation of at least two dollars a day, every day, seven days a week, will help us reach this year's goal of $4 million. A payroll deduction form is enclosed to fill out for your convenience. Won't you return you're donation in the self-addressed envelop provided?

Contact (alt: You can visit the ECF website) the Employee Charitable Foundation to learn more about how your support will help guarantee the future of the United Way in Toronto. In addition to making a financial donation, you can make a difference by organizing a fundraising event. If you have a great idea for an event, please contact your ECF campaign manager who can assist you in the planning process. Take advantage of the new favourable tax rules and donate IBM shares, or include the United Way in your will. Without you, there would be no way.

Assignment 4 (First posting)

Dear colleagues,

As the winter winds chill the air, you can feel extra warm this holiday season by making a tax-deductible donation to the United Way during our year end gift matching campaign.

It's a really exciting time to make a gift to the United Way. Until December 31, for every dollar you donate to the United Way we will double it by a matching gift from the Employee Charitable Foundation up to $5 000.

The United Way could not **happen** without the support of individuals like you. Currently, government support accounts for less than 50 per cent of revenues. The remainder must be made up through the generosity of the public and private sector.

Without your support, the United Way could not **continue** such important initiatives as the Eglinton Community Health Centre, the Pathways to Education Partnership or the Career Search Portal. Please don't hesitate, make a tax-deductible donation today. Take advantage of the new favourable tax rules and donate shares, or include the United Way in your will. A payroll deduction form is enclosed for you to fill out today.

From your filching friend, to Prisci!

Prisci, as she is affectionately known as, is a wonderful person because she is so accepting of other's faults, for example, when I pilfered her textbook (not on purpose! I swear!).

Prisci also has talents that I'm still learning about. Did you know she can dance and performs? She was my first friend in class too! Every time I came to class I got a big Prisci bear hug (trademarked and all) that made me feel especially welcomed. She always there for you. How many times have I messaged her on gmail chat for a pick-me-up at work? Countless. Who could ask for a better friend? I love that Prisci is confident, but vulnerable, yet passionate in what she believes in. This girl will fight for fairness! At the same time, she isn't embarrassed if she doesn't know what "Mr. Smith, I think he's on crack" means, and no one expects her to! The fact that she cares more about understanding than pride is something we should all look up to.

Oh, the first time we went to the cafeteria together, she said hello to everyone there! She's got friends to spare and treats them like her family. Even her cat is awesome (Mishu is so cute it's unreal).

It's amazing how the people in our class treat each other better than most families do. To Prisci, Kate, Arvindi (and anyone else from class who may read this), I hope that next term is just as fun and fruitful as this term was. Again, just as Kate said, Priscila please write about someone else, but not me because I tagged you :) *hugs*

Linda's Hidden Talents

I'm telling you, this girl can do it all! She can hail cabs out of nowhere (with her specially honed cabbie radar), she can make up a song and dance routine about penguins while still looking cool (and feeling warmer while waiting for that darn #124!!), she knows things (like random facts about why men's and women's zippers are on opposite sides, and the difference between "topic" and "topicalization"), she tells great stories (sometimes about bus drivers who steer with their elbows while eating take out), and she loves to cheer us up and make us laugh along with her! Is there anything she can't do?!?!

Thus endeth my little "Ode to Linda". . . I just thought that with all the stress of exams and end of term assignments being due (for us students) and craziness at work and school it would be nice to take a moment to think about the things that really matter - like the people who make our lives so much better. I just wanted to say that I'm really thankful for ALL of you, and so I though why don't we write a little message saying what we appreciate in our fellow bloggers? It will be fun and only take a minute or two. So Linda, you've been tagged, girl! Who are you going to write about? ;)

P.S. Has to be someone other than the person who tagged you! :)
